A Segmented Period–Luminosity Relation for Nearby Extragalactic Delta Scuti Stars

Abstract The period–luminosity relations (PLRs) of Milky Way δ Scuti ( Sct) stars have been described to the present day by a linear relation. However, when studying extragalactic systems such as Magellanic Clouds and several dwarf galaxies, we notice for first time nonlinear behavior in PLR Sct stars. Using largest sample ∼3700 from data available literature—mainly based on Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment Super MAssive Compact Halo Object project Large Cloud (LMC)—we obtain that best fit M V ) plane is given following piecewise relation with break at log P = −1.03 ± 0.01 (or 0.093 0.002 days) shorter periods (sp) longer (lp) than break-point: M V sp = − 7.08 ( ± 0.25 stretchy="false">) log P 5.74 0.29 ; < 1.03 \begin{eqnarray*}{M}_{V}^{\mathrm{lp}}={M}_{V}^{\mathrm{sp}}+4.38(\pm 0.32)\cdot (\mathrm{log}P+1.03(\pm 0.01));\quad \mathrm{log}P\geqslant -1.03.\end{eqnarray*}?> lp + 4.38 0.32 · 0.01 ≥ . Geometric or depth effects LMC, metallicity dependence, different pulsation modes are discarded possible causes this segmented seen origin ∼0.09 days remains unexplained current data.
